San Jacinto CRT Chapter History |
|
In 1934, The Daughters of the Republic of Texas started the junior organization known as the Children of the Republic of Texas. In May 1936 the San Jacinto Chapter, DRT organized the CRT by the same name under the leadership of Mrs. E. R. Ramsey, Chapter President and Mrs. Beemus, the first Third Vice President /CRT Sponsor. The chapter started with thirty four members. Some of those members were Nell Hoover, Dr. Farley, and Margaret Kemp (who was the first President of our CRT Chapter). By the end of the year, membership had grown to forty five members.
The SJC CRT chapter met the first Wednesday of the month after school at the Log House at three thirty in the afternoon. They had speakers and other activities. At Christmas they held a Christmas party, singing Christmas carols, eating delicious foods and inviting everyone to join them.
Mrs Lila Gordon Prestbo Smith had a large part in helping the CRT. Her daughter, Marian Prestbo Beckham (past Chapter President) was a member of our CRT Chapter.
Today the chapter has 70 + members and is still growing and carrying on the traditions of the past. They hold an annual Christmas Open House and Chili Cook off. We release a quarterly newsletter and many of our members participate in the National Officers' General Projects. Many members of our CRT Chapter also volunteer each year at the San Jacinto Day festivities.
